Silma has lived in South West Sydney for the past 30 odd years, bringing up a family of 6 children. She has been a community activist for most of that time, establishing child cares, community associations and schools in the area. Most of her work has been involved with children and their families and ensuring that appropriate services are provided for them.
She is a qualified teacher and educational administrator and has been an active Principal in two schools over the past 24 years. During that time she has struggled often against poor planning, and political campaigns that have negatively targeted South West Sydney.
Silma joined the Democrats in 2006 and ran for the NSW State seat of Auburn. She joined the party due to her disillusionment with the other parties and their inability to provide realistic solutions to the many problems faced by youth, the under privileged and the disadvantaged. Over the years she has been inspired by the principled stand on health, the environment, refugees, asylum seekers, taken by various Democrat senators including Natasha Stott Despoja, Aden Ridgeway and Andrew Bartlett.
Silma is running for the seat of Reid. Labour have been established in Reid for many years and have taken the area for granted, relying on the hard working and large immigrant population to vote for them regardless of the paucity of their services, poor roads, struggling hospital facilities and increasing imposition of dumps and other unnecessary additions to local areas.
Current MP, Laurie Ferguson (ALP) claims to be a man of the people but has been a crucial part of the Labor establishment for many years and represents a strong voice for Unions. It is time that new ideas and new passion are brought into the debate about the many different communities in the electorate of Reid and how their individual needs can be met.
